French I
This course will challenge novice students to develop proficiency in the foundational French language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) by focusing on communication in everyday situations such as school, family and travel. They will also explore the culture of France and other Francophone countries around the world.

French II
Students will be challenged to bring their foundational French language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) to the intermediate level by using language appropriate to a diversity of everyday thematic contexts with increasing elaboration and complexity. They will continue to focus on communication situations against a backdrop of francophone culture. French is the primary language spoken in class.

Honors French II
In this accelerated course, students will prepare for upper level French classes by bringing their foundational French language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) to the intermediate level, using more idiomatic speech, multiple verb tenses and more sophisticated grammatical structures. They will continue to focus on communication in everyday situations against a backdrop of francophone culture. French is the primary language spoken in class.
Prerequisites: 87% in French I and 87% cumulative GPA

College French III
This course challenges students to bring their foundational foreign language skills to an advanced level, with greater emphasis on interpreting authentic audio and written texts, communicating orally and in writing in interpersonal and presentational contexts and using more sophisticated grammatical structures.  Students will broaden their awareness of culture and events in the Francophone world and will acquire vocabulary to address important themes of contemporary life.  Enrollment determines whether the course will be offered for college credit. French is the primary language spoken in class.
Prerequisites: 85% average in Honors French II, 90% French II (87% GPA on an unweighted scale for optional college credit)

College French IV
Students are challenged to polish and integrate their foundational French language skills to attain or exceed an advanced level of proficiency by interpreting authentic audio and written texts (non-fiction and literary), communicating orally and in writing in interpersonal and presentational contexts and using critical thinking skills to analyze evidence and to advocate a position. French is the primary language spoken in class.
Prerequisites: 85% average in College French III (87% GPA on an unweighted scale for optional college credit)

Latin I
The primary goal for Latin I students is to learn the structure of the Latin language in order to acquire facility in reading Latin literature. Emphasis will be placed on building not only Latin vocabulary but also an increased English vocabulary which derives from Latin. In addition, students will master both English and Latin grammars and investigate the culture/history of the Roman people. Basic oral conversation/instructions will be introduced.

Latin II
Latin II students will reinforce and continue to learn the structure of the Latin language in order to master the grammar and vocabulary necessary for reading Latin literature. They will continue to build on both Latin and English vocabularies and grammar. Culture/history of the Romans will also be continued. Basic oral conversation/instructions will be continued.

College Latin III
In this course students will begin their study of Latin literature to develop their reading and comprehension skills further. Readings will focus on the major Latin poets Catullus, Ovid, and Vergil. Major grammatical points and important vocabulary will be reviewed, and poetic and stylistic structures will be introduced. Focus will also be given to broadening students’ knowledge of Roman culture. Enrollment determines whether the course will be offered for dual credit.

College Latin IV
In this course students will continue their immersion into Latin literature and will achieve an advanced level of proficiency in reading Latin texts. Major grammatical points and important vocabulary will be reviewed, and new poetic and stylistic structures will be introduced. Readings will focus on the following: AP selections for Vergil’s Aeneid and Caesar’s De Bello Gallico.

Mandarin Chinese I
This is a beginning course in Mandarin Standard Chinese designed for students who have little or no previous background in the language. This course adopts different pedagogical approaches to help students acquire basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Modern Standard Chinese. While linguistic elements are the focus of this course, culture information that goes along with language usage is also included. The emphasis in class is (a) building vocabulary and sentence patterns in communicative contexts. (b) establishing a solid foundation in pronunciation. (c) developing awareness of Chinese culture.
*Classes are taught by a native speaker. This is a synchronous class taught via interactive distance learning and/or online.

Mandarin Chinese II
This is a low-intermediate course in Mandarin Standard Chinese designed for students who have basic background in the language, such as Pinyin system, numbers, greetings, etc. This course adopts different pedagogical approaches to help students acquire skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Modern Standard Chinese at low-intermediate level. While linguistic elements are the focus of this course, culture information that goes along with language usage is also included. The emphasis in class is (a) building vocabulary and sentence patterns in communicative contexts at low-intermediate level. (b) establishing a solid foundation in character recognition and memorization. (c) developing awareness of Chinese culture.

While linguistic elements are the focus of this course, culture information that goes along with language usage is also included. The emphasis in class is (a) building vocabulary and sentence patterns in communicative contexts at intermediate level. (b) establishing a solid foundation in character recognition and memorization. (c) developing awareness of Chinese culture.

Honors Mandarin Chinese IV
In this course, students will further refine skills in Mandarin Chinese. Through composition and conversation practice, students will master more complex grammatical structures. There will be a heavy emphasis on vocabulary acquisition and character recall. Abundant writing opportunities will help hone skills in summarizing and analyzing ideas into coherent essays. The entire class will be conducted, both by the teacher and students, in Mandarin. Classes are made up of lecture sessions, cultural studies, drill practices, discussion, reading comprehension practice, listening comprehension practice, situational dialogue practice, and language games.
Prerequisites: 85% each semester of Mandarin Chinese III

Spanish I
In this course,  students  will learn grammar and vocabulary that will help them communicate in the target language. Students will be introduced to the Hispanic countries and their cultures, and  they will develop cultural awareness, allowing  them to appreciate diversity.

Spanish II
The Spanish II student will build on the vocabulary and grammar studied in Spanish I, which also will be strengthened through compositions and projects. She will increase her communicative competence in the target language through active participation. In addition, the student will continue to develop cultural awareness while being introduced to authentic materials.

Spanish III
In this course, students will increase vocabulary, review all concepts presented in the first and second year courses and acquire new grammar skills.  They will be exposed to different cultural products and perspectives of the Spanish speaking world.

Spanish IV
Students will review the grammar and vocabulary from the three previous courses and they will learn more complex grammar structures and vocabulary.  The emphasis of this course will be in the development of the communication skills and the exploration of the Spanish and Latin American cultures.

Honors Spanish V
A fifth year of Spanish is offered when there is sufficient demand for such a course. This course offers students  the opportunity to continue to develop their language skills through the continued study of the products and perspectives of the diverse Hispanic cultures. Through authentic readings, videos, and class discussions in the target language, students explore cultural themes emphasizing topics relating to modern society in the Spanish speaking world. Emphasis is placed on enriching the language experience and strengthening the student’s ability to communicate both verbally and in written form. Increased language proficiency will be achieved by means of extensive oral discussion of current events. Emphasis is also placed on the appreciation of Hispanic art, history, and culture.

College Spanish III

College Spanish IV
The College Spanish IV student will build and reinforce her oral skills and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. She will also be introduced to Hispanic literature through selections written by different writers. Grammar will be reinforced through compositions and activities; verbal skills will continue to develop through class discussions and  exams. Spanish is the primary language spoken in class.
Prerequisites: 89% in College Spanish III (87% GPA on an unweighted scale for optional college credit)
