About STA
Kansas City’s premier college-preparatory school for girls
Since our founding in 1866 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Teresa’s Academy has been a special place. With a tradition and commitment to personal, academic, and spiritual growth STA fosters, nurtures, and guides students to become the leaders of tomorrow.
STA is located on a beautiful, college-like campus in the heart of the Brookside and South Plaza neighborhoods. Here, students are encouraged to learn about the world and think beyond classroom walls to succeed in an increasingly international and competitive environment.
Accredited by Cognia (formerly North Central Association/AdvancED) since 1923, STA molds students into confident, skilled and caring young women through a challenging curriculum, an all-female environment, a diverse student body, Catholic values and personal responsibility.
Welcome to the St. Teresa’s Academy website! I encourage you to browse through our site to see what makes STA special.
STA is Kansas City’s oldest school. It has a rich legacy of learning and female empowerment instilled by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Driven by the sisters’ leadership and vision, STA’s outstanding faculty and staff come to campus every day to fulfill our mission:
To educate young women to think critically, encourage them through Catholic values to love the dear neighbor without distinction, and empower them to change the world.
STA provides the region’s premier college preparatory education for young women. Not only do our students receive the best education available, they learn the value of community by embracing service, inclusivity and diversity, just as our founders did. Our students graduate with the spirit and confidence to take on life’s challenges and, yes, to change the world.
As part of STA’s community – parents and students, alumnae and friends, and faculty and staff – I invite you to join me in upholding the Academy’s mission and vision of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
STA’s motto, Deo Adjuvante Non Timendum, translates to, “With the help of God, we need not fear.” Let us charge forward boldly, as the sisters did, with love, grace and service, and continue doing our part to affect change in the world.
God Bless,
Dr. Siabhan May-Washington

Diversity has been a key component of the Academy’s mission and philosophy since its founding in 1866. The STA community values and embraces a racially, culturally, ethnically, geographically and economically diverse student body and school community. Students, faculty and staff with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives enrich and enhance the learning process and help each other develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are so vital to succeed and live a meaningful life in today’s global community.
One of STA’s core values states:
We believe that recognizing each person’s authentic self and the multitude of differences that exist in our society creates a meaningful community built on mutual respect and dignity for all.
