STA faculty member to serve on AWP Conference panel

September 16, 2022

Nic Shump, M.F.A., STA social studies teacher, has been selected to serve on a panel at the 2023 Association of Writers & Writing Programs (AWP) Conference. The panel is titled, Weeping Women: La Llorona’s Presence in Modern Latinx and Chicanx Lore (Norma Cantú, Mark Esperanza, Tamara Mitchell, Elizabeth Jimenez Montelongo, Nic Toledo, Shump). It focuses on one of the most pervasive yet least studied tropes in Latin American culture — the figure of La Llorona, the weeping woman.

Doomed to wander riverbanks searching for her children, La Llorona is both accursed and revered, especially in Mexico and the borderlands of the U.S. A mixed-genre anthology from Trinity University Press brings poets, researchers, artists, and storytellers together from diverse backgrounds and geographies to examine her influence in the past, present, and future.

The conference will be held March 8-11, 2023, in Seattle, Washington.
