SOFIA, Class of 2023
Elementary/Middle School: Leawood Middle School
Activities/Interests: Dance Team, Theatre
Why did you choose to attend St. Teresa's Academy?
I chose to attend St. Teresa's Academy because my mom and older sister both graduated from STA and had the best experiences. I also chose STA because I loved the all-girl, empowering environment and I felt at home when I shadowed.
What has been your favorite class at STA?
My favorite class I have taken at STA has been Ancient World History during my freshman year because I find all history very interesting, especially ancient history. I am excited to get to take more advanced options of history and social studies in the coming years at St. Teresa's.
What is your favorite part of the STA community?
My favorite part of the STA community is how fun, inclusive, and involved all the students are. It is so fun seeing every single girl go all out for the themed spirit days and student sections of athletic events! I also love that all of the students come from so many different grade schools and backgrounds.
What has been your most memorable experience at STA?
So far, my most memorable experience at STA has been practicing, performing, and competing with the Dance Team. The sports at St. Teresa's are such a great way to meet girls in and outside of your class. For some sports, practice even starts before the school year begins. I am on my second year of Dance Team and love getting to spend time with, and dance with, girls who share the same interest as me, whether at practices, dancing at volleyball/basketball games, team dinners, dance camp, or outside of practice team bonding.
Looking back at your year(s) at STA, what would you tell yourself on the first day of school?
Looking back, I would tell myself on the first day of school to be myself, smile, be friendly to every student and teacher I meet, branch out, and don’t be nervous. I would introduce myself to as many girls as possible and remember not to just stick to the few girls I already knew coming in. Finding new friends is not as daunting as it seems, especially in such a fun and positive environment as STA. I would also remind myself to relax and get excited for freshman year.
What advice would you give to prospective students who are considering STA?
I would advise prospective students to shadow at STA. It is such a great way to get a feel for what everyday life for a student at St. Teresa's is like. I would also recommend going to the Open House or other events led by STA staff and upperclassmen because those opportunities give a professional and academic understanding of what our school has to offer.
What is the one thing you have learned most about yourself? How has STA helped you discover that?
From my one year at STA, I have learned that I like helping and leading others. I loved being a shadow hostess and getting to lead prospective students around campus and teach them about everything I love about my school. I love talking and meeting new people, and STA has given me opportunities to recognize that in myself.
