St. Teresa’s Academy announced the hiring of Katie Martincich as the new head volleyball coach. Martincich is the 7th head coach in the program’s 42nd-year history.
Martincich is a Kansas City native and Bishop Miege graduate. During her high school career, Martincich led the Stags to three 5A state championships and competed on nationally ranked club teams. She was named the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year in 2004 and received the Kansas City Star Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award in 2005. Martincich competed at the University of Kansas. As a Jayhawk, Martincich led the team in assists and digs multiple years throughout her career. She received various Big 12 academic honors and participated as a SAAC student advisory member. For her work on and off the court, Martincich was named the 2008 Big 12 Sportperson of the Year.
“We’re thrilled to have Coach Martincich join our coaching staff at STA,” Athletic Director, Ty Abney said. “Her playing and coaching credentials speak for themselves, but ultimately her love for the game, and love for inspiring young women to compete at a high level set her apart from our incredibly talented pool of candidates. Her analytical approach, value of hard work in both the classroom and gym makes her a great fit for our traditioned program. I’m looking forward to summer camps and the fall season to watch Coach continue guiding our young women.”
Following her playing career, Martincich transitioned into a coaching role for KC Power. She served as a head coach for ages 14 through 18 during her seven years with the club. Her teams competed in the open levels and placed within the top 10 in the country. Her success at the club level opened up the opportunity to coach at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Martincich spent one season with the Demon Deacons coaching their setters and defensive players. Upon returning to Kansas City, Martincich has spent the last 4 years coaching youth volleyball in various ages, levels, and positions.
"I'm extremely excited for the opportunity to coach, lead, and mentor the volleyball players at STA,” Martincich said. “I believe that sports have the power to build confidence, teamwork, and problem solving that will last a lifetime. I am proud and humbled to have the opportunity to lead this program."
Martincich has a Business Degree in Marketing and a Masters in Health & Fitness Psychology. She is currently the Chief Marketing Officer at Charlie Hustle.
