Cross Country Team Wins Fourth Meet of the Season at Gans Creek

The Stars had a remarkable showing at the Third Annual Gans Creek Classic on September 25. This is the most competitive meet of the regular season and the girls were defending their title from last year. The Stars were in third place as a team in the first kilometer, moved up to second place in the second kilometer, took the lead in the third kilometer and maintained the lead through the finish. The Stars finished first out of 26 teams in the gold division.

All ten runners ran incredible races. Senior Amelia Arrieta pulled away from the lead pack shortly after the second kilometer and increased her lead throughout the race. Amelia finished in a time of 17:24, obliterating the previous course record of 18:03 on a course that is also run in November for the Missouri State meet. Amelia finished 31 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, who was last year’s Missouri Class 5 state champion in cross country and the previous course record holder. Her time was the fastest 5K time run by a Missouri high school runner since 2015. Amelia is now the eighth fastest female runner in Missouri history and her time is currently the 33rd fastest 5K time in the nation.

Senior Sydney Swan was our second finisher in 15th place with a time of 18:58, a twelve second improvement from her previous PR at last year’s state meet, where she finished ninth and earned All-State honors. Sydney ran negative splits in her fourth and fifth kilometers and her last kilometer of 3:35 was her fastest one. Sydney’s time was the 21st fastest 5K time ever run by an STA runner.

Sophomore Gracie Jacobs was our third finisher in 16th place with a time of 19:02, a 22 second improvement from her previous PR at last year’s KC Classic. Gracie ran 25 seconds faster than she did at last year’s state meet, where she finished in eleventh place with All-State honors. Gracie ran negative splits in the fourth and fifth kilometers. Gracie’s time was the 25th fastest 5K time ever run by an STA runner.

Sophomore Hailey Scheuer was our fourth finisher in 31st place with a time of 19:40, a one second improvement from last year’s PR at the state meet, where she finished with All-State honors in 21st place. Hailey ran negative splits in the fourth and fifth kilometers and ran 52 seconds faster than she did at this meet last year.

Senior Maddie Weiford was our fifth scoring runner, finishing in 36th place with a time of 19:49. This is the fastest time she has run in two years, since the sectional meet at Joplin her sophomore year. Maddie ran identical splits of 4:05 for the fourth and fifth kilometer and she ran 1:07 faster than she did at this meet last year.

Sophomore Lillie Grever was our sixth runner, finishing in 37th place with a time of 19:52, a six second PR from last year’s state meet, where she finished with All-State honors in 25th place. Lillie ran a negative split in the fourth and fifth kilometers and she was 47 seconds faster than she was at this meet last year.

Senior Lilly Hupke was our seventh runner, finishing in 45th place was a time of 19:59, a three second PR from the KC Classic her freshman year. Lilly ran negative splits in the fourth and fifth kilometers and she was 31 seconds faster than she was at this meet last year.

Sophomore Julia Sulzer was our eighth finisher in 57th place with a time of 20:17, a 59 second PR from last year’s KC Classic. Julia ran negative splits in the fourth and fifth kilometers.

Sophomore Ellie Welsh was our ninth finisher in 103rd place with a time of 21:02, a PR of seven seconds from last year’s KC Classic. Ellie ran negative splits in the fourth and fifth kilometers.

Senior Grace Uecker was our tenth finisher in 107th place with a time of 21:04, a PR of 59 seconds from last week’s Kris Solsberg Invitational. This was Grace’s first varsity race and the fourth Saturday in a row she set a new PR. Her PR in her first 5K this season was 23:18. Grace ran negative splits in her fourth and fifth kilometers.

The Stars were beyond thrilled with their individual and team results and were delighted to run so well on Coach Egner’s birthday. Even though all ten runners ran incredible times, all ten of them were able to maintain a negative split in the last two kilometers of the race, a feat that is rarely seen in high school runners.

The Stars will compete at the KC Classic this Saturday at Raymore-Peculiar High School. C team races at 8:00, Varsity Girls race at 9:30, JV girls run at 10:30 and awards are at 12:00.
