What words of inspiration can you share with students?
If you put in the work, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. There are many women who have paved the way to prepare a seat at the table and it’s up to you to continue working towards being the new leaders in STEAM fields.
What sparked your interest in a STEAM field?
From a very young age, I had an interest in science, specifically biology. I didn’t have physicians in my family so that interest was sparked by television shows such as Trapper John, M.D. and St. Elsewhere. It sounds funny to me now but that’s truly how I became interested in medicine. One of my biggest influences at St. Teresa's Academy was my experience in chemistry with Sister Harriet. She was tough, but she made me love chemistry. I pursued activities in high school that helped further my interest in the medical field. While at STA, I received information about a Summer Scholars program that was sponsored by the UMKC School of Medicine and I participated in the program for two years. In this program, we were exposed to the school’s curriculum and took medical school classes to give us a sample of what medical education would be like. This was an enjoyable experience and furthered my interest in pursuing a career in medicine.
What part of your career inspires you the most?
As an OB-GYN, I take care of women during their entire reproductive lives. I enjoy developing relationships with the patients and their families. The field of obstetrics and gynecology gives me an opportunity to be exposed to a relatively healthy patient population and also provides me the opportunity to deliver babies and perform surgery. Delivering babies never gets old as it is truly a privilege to bring new life into the world.
