National Honor Society Application


Selection Process
Membership in the STAR Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) is bestowed upon a student. Selection is by a faculty and staff council and is based upon outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service as evidenced in the application for membership. The faculty council reviews applications using student numbers, student names are not identified.


  • Be a current junior or senior. 
  • Have a cumulative grade point average of 93% or higher at time of application (as of June 2020 report card) and at time of induction (as of January 2021 report card). 

The student who serves: works well with others and is willing to sacrifice to offer assistance; participates in some outside activity above and beyond the graduation requirements; cheerfully and enthusiastically renders service to the school and shows courtesy by assisting visitors, faculty and students. 

  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of service to St. Teresa’s Academy between March 15-November 15 of application year. 
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours of service to the Kansas City community between March 15-November 15 of application year. 

The student who exercises leadership: exemplifies a positive attitude and is dependable in any responsibility accepted; contributes ideas toward the improvement of the school or community; and has taken a constructive lead in school and community activities.

  • Successfully demonstrate leadership by holding office or positions of responsibility at STA or in a community activity/organization. (Included on resume & essays) 


  • Character – selection will be by review of each candidate’s discipline history at STA. Student Behavior Reports (SBRs) will be reviewed closely. Truancy from STA, cheating, vandalism, forgery, and other offensive behaviors may prevent a student from being selected.
Leadership, Honors & Activities
In this section please upload a PDF resume that includes your extracurricular activities, church, and community activities, as well as honors received since your freshman year (do not list any middle school activities/honors). Note time involved, offices held, accomplishments, etc. You may create your own document or use the word document attached to the NHS Application email. DO NOT INCLUDE SERVICE TO STA OR THE COMMUNITY in this section.

STA and Community Service Log
In this section you will upload two PDF documents - Service to STA and Community service. ALL SERVICE HOURS MUST FALL BETWEEN MARCH 15 AND NOVEMBER 15 OF THE APPLICATION YEAR.

This may be fulfilled by assisting a teacher, working open house, big sisters, recruitment activities, auction work, athletic concessions, etc. ** Practicum credit, hours associated with a course, or hours used for a service scholarship at STA, may not be duplicated.

This may be fulfilled by completing hours outside of the STA Community (STA Mission Trips may count). The 90 hours required for graduation may not be used.

The essay requirement tells the committee a great deal about our NHS Candidates and allows for the expression of writing ability, organizational skills, and creativity. Complete an essay for each of the following topics.

"I, the undersigned, understand that completion of this application does not guarantee membership in the Star Chapter of the National Honor Society at St. Teresa's Academy. I agree to accept the decision of the committee charged with the responsibility of selecting members as final. Annual continuation of membership requires a minimum of 10 hours of community service and 10 hours of service to STA each school year. It also requires a 93.0 cumulative grade point average."
