Ongoing Alumnae Volunteer Opportunities

STA eMentoring Program - Fall and Spring semesters
This opportunity involves a limited amount of time for busy professionals, and it is not limited to time barriers or geography. eMentoring involves online only interactions between an STA student paired with a woman professional who’s in a career that the student is interested in pursuing. This involves a minimum of 8 e-mail interactions; 4 from the eMentee (student) to the eMentor (professional) asking questions, and 4 responses from the eMentor back to the eMentee. (The pairing of eMentors and eMentees is subject to the interests the students want to pursue each fall and spring semester. eMentors will be placed in a pool of volunteers until a student is found as a match.)

STA Substitute Teacher - All School Year
STA alums with 60+ college credit hours may sign up to help us when the need arises for a substitute teacher. This gives our graduates a chance to come back to STA and find out first-hand what the day in the lives of our students is like. Substitutes are paid a $100 stipend/day.

Volunteer Tutor - During Summers and After School
Aspiring STA students are often in need of some remedial course work in Math and English, in order to perform well on the HSPT entrance exam, or to help them succeed, once they are admitted as a student. Interested 
tutors should discuss opportunities with our Principal of Academics.

Volunteer Chaperone - Throughout the School Year
STA offers many opportunities for our students to participate in service projects throughout the school year. These activities require adult supervision. Alums are welcome to help our Campus Minister by offering to chaperone.

STA Class Rep or Ambassador - Ongoing, Year-Round
STA tries to have at least two members from each graduating class as liaisons to their classmates. We are still in need of some class reps for some classes, or some spots may be coming available soon. Ambassadors are alums willing to help with fundraising efforts for their class. Interested alums should contact the Alumnae Director. This is a fun way to stay connected to your classmates and the Academy.

Women’s Circle of Giving - Two Events, 1 in Fall and 1 in Spring
This alumnae organization supports the mission of STA, by providing support to both students and faculty/staff, meeting needs outside of our operating budget. Half of the contributions from WCG are distributed to students in financial crisis, and the other half is distributed (based on member voting) as grants to faculty/staff who have requested funds for projects of professional development which benefits our students. Membership is $250/school year, and discounted to $125/school year for Junior Membership (under 35). If an alumna under the age of 35 would like to find out more about the program, you are welcome to attend the next event (date TBD), without becoming a member. Membership involves two meetings each year. In the fall, grant recipients share how they used the funds they were awarded.  In the spring, membership meets to review grant requests and vote on the distribution of funds.

STAR Galaxy - Year-Round 
Diversity Committee: STAR Galaxy is committed to increasing cultural competency, diversity, and inclusion, both in our student body as well as our faculty and staff. Members meet once a month to plan events, introduce initiatives, and support efforts to recruit more diversity in our community. Alumnae are 
welcome to serve on this committee.

Internships for STA Students - (TBD)
As a fundraising opportunity, this year STA is going to offer internships for bid at the annual STA auction. Students’ parents or friends can bid on a one-week internship in one of several areas of interest to students. If an alum owns a business or practice, or is in a position to create an internship, they can offer it to STA to help raise funds for the school.

Starbeams Highlighted Alumna
Alumnae have great news to share with us about their lives, including their work, their families, and their accomplishments. We invite alums to share news about themselves or a fellow alumna. This news will be published in our Starbeams, and possibly featured in our Spotlight on Alumnae.

STAR Shop - During School Year
Temporarily located in the office just inside the front doors of Donnelly, the STAR Shop is open after school most days, at home sporting events, and during special STA events. (When the renovation is complete, the STAR Shop will be located to the left of the entrance to Goppert, near the Concession.) The STAR Shop can also be accessed through STA’s website. The Christmas sale is Sat. 12/2/17! We hope our alums wear STA spirit wear with pride. Alums are welcome to volunteer in the Shop.

Volunteer in Makerspace - Spring 2018
Alumnae who are interested in robotics or are makers can volunteer to help students with projects in the new robotics lab/makerspace, once open (May 2018).

STAReaders - All Year
Alums may donate a new book to the STA library collection, and help us update the selection of classic books. The gift will be highlighted with a personalized nameplate and date of the donation.

STA Calendar of Events

Alums are always welcome to attend any of our Masses, annual fundraisers, plays, concerts, or special ceremonies here at the Academy. Check the website for dates and times, but here is a list of some of the activities:

Passing of the Legacy
This ceremony held with the student body the first day of every school year, to prayerfully open the school year with the traditional “ringing of the bell”, welcome the freshman, recognize the students as school leaders, and begin classes as a community, focused on the mission of STA. Please join us.
To attend, simply come to the Auditorium the morning of the event. Watch the school calendar on the website to find out the first day of school.

Student Recruiting Coffees
In the fall, the Admissions office holds 4-6 coffees, inviting 8th grade girls and their parents onto the campus in the evening, to hear more about our academics, extracurriculars, activities, and the sisterhood at STA. Alums are welcome to help host these events, which are scheduled on Monday evenings throughout October, November, and December.

Recruitment Open House
On a Sunday in October or early November, we open up the campus for tours and to answer questions for girls considering STA. Alums are welcome to help host this annual event.

Alumnae Reunion
Usually held the first Saturday in October, this annual event welcomes back to the Academy all graduates, and honors the classes celebrating special reunion years. Mass is held in the Auditorium, with a dinner reception in the gym following the Mass. The STA Alumna of the Year is honored at this event, and the 50th reunion class is also recognized. Alums from any year are certainly welcome to attend, and also help with set up, during the event, and clean up. Alumnae are also invited to celebrate their reunion by donating to the    “Give-A-Year Scholarship”, with the goal of covering the cost of tuition of a    student with financial need. With over 1,200 alums celebrating their reunions each year, this has become a meaningful way to celebrate the STA sisterhood and enable a young woman to attend the Academy who might otherwise not have the opportunity.

STA Fall Musical
STA welcomes alums and the public to the fall Musical. This fall, students will be performing the play “Nine to Five” on November 8, 9, 10, and 11.

STA Annual Auction
This year the auction, “Light Their Way” will be held in the gym again. This annual event, held on the Saturday before Thanksgiving every year, is the Academy’s largest fundraiser. Alums 30 and under may buy a ticket at the reduced staff/faculty rate. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, 11/18/17.

Alumnae Choral Reunion
For the first time this year, alumnae who enjoyed being in the chorus, Madrigals, or STA Singers, are invited to come back to the Academy to get back up on the risers and lift their voices in song. Those who didn’t enjoy singing on those risers can join the audience. Chocolate and wine will be served prior to the 7:00 p.m. performance in the Auditorium on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017. This event is part of the Alumnae Fine Arts Showcase series.

STA Christmas Concert
Open to the public, the annual concert will take place in the M&A Auditorium on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. All alums and their guests are welcome.

STA Prayer Breakfast
For the first time this year, STA is hosting a Prayer Breakfast with Sr. Rosemary Flanigan as our guest speaker. The event details are being discussed, but the funds raised from this event will support scholarship for students of diversity. The date will be determined, but it will probably be the last week in January 2018, which is Catholic Schools Week.

Mad for Plaid
STA students put on an annual fashion show, modeling the designs they have created, using the plaid fabric from an STA uniform skirt. Fashions range from creative street clothing to formalwear. Alums in the fashion industry may volunteer to be judges, and all alums are welcome to attend the show. This year’s Mad for Plaid will be January 26, 2018 in Auditorium.

Parent/Alumnae Book Review
In February 2018, a Book Club is being formed, to also discuss Some of My Best Friends are Black. It will be moderated by Michelle Wimes, STA Board President and Director of Professional Development and Inclusion at a Kansas City law firm. STA Parents and Alums are welcome to join in this discussion. More details to come. (Date: TBD).

Trivia Night
Held the second Saturday in February, alums and friends come together in the STA gym for a casual night of testing their wits, their creativity, and their luck (with raffle prizes and contests), at this annual event. Attendees bring their own food and drinks, and dress themselves and their table to the theme. This year’s Trivia Night theme is “Villians and Heroes” and it will be on Saturday, February 10, 2018. This is always a sell-out event. Proceeds benefit the STA Alumnae Scholarships.

Women’s Symposium
A new tradition at STA began last spring, inviting women speakers to share their work in philanthropy, social concerns, and entrepreneurial work in their professional lives with our students.. The Women’s Symposium is an all-day event. Alumnae involved in these kinds of not-for-profits who are interested in speaking are welcome to call us about their organizations. The format is similar to a TedTalk, with a discussion session afterwards. This year’s event will be on Friday, February 23, 2018, time TBD.

Mother Evelyn O’Neill Award Ceremony
This award goes to a woman in Kansas City who is making a difference in the world, in their service to the dear neighbor. Three candidates are nominated, and the woman chosen for the award gives a talk to the STA student body. The event is followed with a reception. Alums are welcome to nominate a candidate for this honor. This year’s award will be given on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

Linger Over Breakfast
Sisters of St. Joseph and CSJ Associates shares insights and opportunities to explore our spiritual selves. Events are alternately held at STA’s Windmoor Center and Avila University’s Whitfield Center. The next event will be held on Sat., April 7 from 8:30-11 a.m. at STA. Breakfast is included.

Alumnae Fine Arts Showcase
STA alums artists, musicians, designers, and dancers come back to STA to share their artistic talent. Wine and chocolate is served at a reception, prior to the performance. Alums are welcome and encouraged to bring their friends and family. The next events will be Thursday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. Talent TBD.

STA Scholarship Night
Annually, we bring together the donors who have given to the STA Endowment or Financial Aid to thank them and introduce them to the students who are the recipients of their generosity. Dinner is served and students sit with the donors. Many alums have chosen to start a scholarship in a loved one’s name. We encourage alums to consider getting together a group from their class to make contributions to an annually distributed scholarship. Many small donations can add up to a significant investment in a student with financial need. For more details, please contact the development office. Scholarship Night this year is Tuesday, April 24, 2018.

Fine Arts Showcase
Once a year, the first week of May, our students’ artistic talent is on display throughout our buildings, and alums, parents, and friends of the Academy are invited to view their art and hear their music. This year’s Showcase will be on Thursday, May 3, 2018.
To attend, guests simply arrive on campus the night of the event and tour.
