All students applying for admission into the freshman class of 2022 are required to take the High School Placement Test (HSPT). This standardized exam provides an assessment of students’ math, verbal, reading, language and science knowledge.

The HSPT will be administered on the St. Teresa’s Academy campus on January 6, 2018. All students should arrive at Donnelly Hall by 8:15 a.m.

Walk-in test takers are welcome. Walk-in students should bring a $20 testing fee. If your daughter needs any special accommodations for the test, please contact the Office of Admissions prior to the test day.

HSPT Test FAQs

Q. What do I need to bring to the placement test?
A. Students do not need to bring anything on test day -- #2 pencils are provided.

Q. Are calculators permitted?
A. No. One measure of this test is the student’s ability to compute math and science problems without the use of a calculator.

Q. Is there a fee to take the HSPT?
A. The testing fee is covered by your $20 application fee (for those who have completed the New Student Application Form).

Q. When will we receive the results of the test?
A. Test results are returned to St. Teresa’s Academy. Those results, along with our letters of decision, will be mailed to students by February 1, 2018.

Q. What test does St. Teresa’s Academy administer?
A. St. Teresa’s Academy administers the HSPT by Scholastic Testing Service, Inc.

Q. Will high schools automatically share the results of the placement test with other Catholic high schools?
A. No, but if you would like your placement test scores forwarded to another Catholic school, you may contact the Office of Admission and request that we forward the scores to the appropriate school. We strongly recommend that you take the test at the school you are most likely to attend. Admission is offered first to those students who test at STA. Other students may be placed on a waiting list. Our scholarships for incoming freshmen are based on a student’s performance on the HSPT, and are awarded first to students who test at St. Teresa’s Academy.

Q. How does St. Teresa’s Academy use the results of the placement test?
A. The results are primarily used to ensure proper placement in the 9th grade courses offered. Scores are reviewed as part of the admission process to ensure a student’s readiness for academic success at STA.

Q. Are there academic accommodations for the HSPT?
A. STA is able to support students who need limited accommodations for success in a college preparatory high school environment. Extended time for test taking (time and a half) and preferential seating may be offered to students with diagnosed learning differences accompanied by a recommendation by a licensed or certified evaluator.

Requesting Accommodations: Documentation, as defined by the College Board and ACT (see below), needs to be submitted to the director of admissions prior to the test date.

Necessary documentation should include:

  1. Copies of any psycho-educational evaluations conducted that include a diagnosis, the results of all administered cognitive ability and academic achievement tests, and a recommendation of extended time on tests. Testing should be current (within three years) and should include dates, specific test results and the credentials of the evaluating professional. A doctor’s letter or prescription is not sufficient documentation to receive extended time.
  2. IEP’s or 504 Educational Plans created at the grade school level. STA does not create or make determinations based on IEP’s or 504 Plans.
